About the Oakridge Community Garden

The Oakridge Community Garden provides opportunities for local residents to grow vegetables, fruit and flowers in a community setting. By obtaining a Plot Use Permit for a plot at the Community Garden, individuals and/or groups can gain access to a garden plot, and the water and tools (where available) needed to produce a successful garden. Community gardens can help improve air and soil quality, increase animal and plant biodiversity, access to fresh foods, and provide numerous health and wellbeing benefits.

The Community Garden is organized into two sections:

Public Common Area

A public common area contains fruit trees including apples, pears, plums, cherries and an almond tree, and blueberries, strawberries, grapes, and an herb circle. There is a picnic table and benches for sitting and enjoying the garden. The public is welcome in the common area of the garden and allowed to harvest fruit from the trees and berries. Please be respectful of the plants at all times especially when harvesting. Never harvest more than a fair share and always leave something for the next person. There are no restrooms in the garden so consider this before you come. Dogs must be on leash at all times and take any waste and trash with you when you leave.

Private Plot Area

A private plot area contains garden plots where experienced and aspiring gardeners can grow their own annual food crops. The public is not allowed in the private plots. Gardeners must register for a plot in the spring and pay a fee of $25 for a regular plot or $50 for a large plot which includes water for the season. There may be a discount for low-income gardeners. Inquire at city hall for the registration form and rules or see the garden handbook attached to this webpage. Organic gardening is required - no pesticides or herbicides are allowed in the plots. Dogs are not allowed in the private plots.

The garden also includes many areas for flowers to provide food and shelter for beneficial insects including bees. Please do not pick the flowers.
