Delay in fall outdoor burning season until October 15

Delay in fall outdoor burning season until October 15

September 28, 2023

LANE COUNTY — Lane County residents will have to wait until Sunday, October 15, 2023, for the opening of the fall outdoor burning season. The season was originally scheduled to start on October 1. However, the decision to delay has been jointly made by the Lane County Fire Defense Board and the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF).

"The recent rainfall, though promising, is not sufficient to declare the end of fire season," said Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) spokesperson, Travis Knudsen. "Lane County and statewide fire authorities have made this decision out of an abundance of caution."

While the burning season is delayed, yard debris may not be burned. Residents can use services like Lane Forest Products, Rexius, or Lane County's transfer stations and dumpsites for disposing of woody yard material in the interim. Violations for burning during the closed season could result in fines ranging from $50 to $2,500 or more.

LRAPA has also released a factsheet providing information on non-burning disposal alternatives for natural vegetation in Lane County.

The Lane County Fire Defense Board and ODF will re-evaluate conditions closer to October 15. To check the status of the burning season, visit LRAPA's website or call the LRAPA daily open burning advisory line at 541-726-3976. Coastal residents may call 541-997-1757.
